Glen Keane Returns to Vancouver

A 38-year veteran of Walt Disney Feature Animation, legendary artist Glen Keane is responsible for shaping a generation of fans, having created such memorable characters as The Little Mermaid’s Ariel and the Beast in Beauty & the Beast.

Mr. Keane presented his directorial debut Duet at SPARK Animation and we are excited to welcome him once again to present his latest project, Dear Basketball, an animated collaboration between Mr. Keane, legendary basketball icon, Kobe Bryant, and 5-time Academy Award-winning composer, John Williams.

Mr. Keane will be introducing his new film at the SPARK ANIMATION Celebration on Thursday, October 26 at the Scotiabank Theatre. Tickets for this event can be purchased at the Festival website.

In addition, Mr. Keane will be the keynote presenter at the SPARK ANIMATION Conference. The 2-day conference passes are currently on sale at an early-bird discounted price of $150 (33% off!).

They say “draw what you know” Danny Antonucci has made a career inspired from his life on the Vancouver Eastside. From being the force responsible for the longest running original Cartoon Network series Ed, Edd n Eddy, to producing cult classics like Lupo the Butcher and The Brothers Grunt, he continues to influence and inspire a generation of like-minded independents.

On Saturday, September 9 at 1:30 PM, join us at the Vancouver Film School, as Danny regales us with tales of how he turned his independent voice and unique brand of animation into a successful career.

Puppet Fabrication at LAIKA

Coraline, Norman, Kubo... over the years LAIKA has created an amazing roster of memorable characters who are difficult, if not impossible, to forget.

On Friday, September 15, join us as we welcome Georgina Hayns, Creative Supervisor of Puppet Fabrication at LAIKA, as she takes us through the collaborative filmmaking process behind each of LAIKA’s four Oscar-nominated features: Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo & the Two Strings with a focus on the fabrication element of the filmmaking.

SPARK ANIMATION 2017 Submission Deadline Approaching

This year, SPARK ANIMATION 2017 runs from October 26 to 29. Whether you’re an independent filmmaker, a big studio, or a student, we want your projects but the deadline to get them into us is quickly approaching!

Regular submission deadline is September 1, 2017 while the extended deadline is September 11, 2017. That only gives you a couple of weeks to share your project with us, be it a commercial or PSA, music video or experimental project, personal story or a game cinematic.

All submitted projects are eligible for the SPARK Awards as well as the newly announced WIA Diversity Award which will be presented on opening night, Thursday, October 26.
