Nora Twomey & Glen Keane Celebrated

The festival opened last night to two sold out screenings beginning with the presentation of the inaugural WIA Diversity Awards. Among the winners were Disney Animation Studios, Oscar-winning director John Kahrs (Paperman) and Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey who was celebrated for her efforts in advancing women in the field of animation and her achievement as the only woman to solo direct an animated feature film this year.

The second screening of the night included the presentation of the SPARK Jury Awards with filmmakers John Kahrs (Paperman) picking up his prize for Best Commercial, PSA & Self Promotion for his for his short film June: Life Is Better When You Share The Ride, Trevor Jimenez who collected the Director's Prize for Weekends while part of the directing team of Garden Party, directors Victor Caire, Théophile Dufresne and Gabriel Grapperon, were on hand to collect their awards for Best Student Animation and Best in Show.

Garden Party will screen again on Saturday, October 28 at 5PM as part of the “Spotlight on France” program.

The evening continued with the presentation of the Spark CG Lifetime Achievement Award to Glen Keane.

The animation legend congenially spoke with many in the crowd before and after the screening and presented a rousing acceptance speech about following your dreams. A truly unforgettable evening for everyone who attended.

Today at SPARK

Festival screenings continue tonight at the VIFF Vancity Theatre! The evening will kick off at 7:30PM with this year's “Mothers of a Medium” program featuring thirteen projects from female directors from around the world! Highlights include Canadian director Lori Malépart-Traversy's brilliant The Clitoris and Cécile Carre's Burnout which won Runner Up Best Student Animation at this year's SPARK Festival.

The evening continues at 9:30PM with a screening of the SPARK Festival Best 3D Animation winner Revolting Rhymes. We are pleased to screen the Canadian Theatrical Premiere of Parts 1 and 2 of this BBC produced bit of comedic genius.

Friday night will close with “After Dark,” a program for those with more adventurous tastes. Highlights include a vengeful cat you'll never forget in Minou, killer appliances in the darkly comedic Bad Vibes and a truly unforgettable boxing match in Preston.

Proceeds from all of the screenings benefit Covenant House Vancouver.
