SPARK Festival Announces Features & Special Guests

We have been teasing some very special programming to celebrate our 10th anniversary and we are pleased to announce some of the great films which will be playing at this year’s SPARK ANIMATION Festival! More titles to be announced soon!

On Friday, October 26, SPARK is pleased to welcome director Damian Nenow to Vancouver to introduce Another Day of Life, the award-winning film which made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.

Based on the book of the same name by Ryszard Kapuscinski, the film recounts the journalist's trip to Angola to cover the civil war and how that assignment changed his perspective on the world.

Nenow will be joined by art director Rafal Wojtunik to introduce the film and to participate in a post-screening Q&A.

SPARK will also be presenting the Canadian premiere of Funan.

Winner of the Cristal award at this year’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Denis Do’s powerful film is the tale of survival and the struggle of a young mother during the Khmer Rouge revolution, to find her 4-year-old son, torn from his family by the Cambodian regime.

On Saturday, October 27, SPARK will present a special matinee screening of Sgt. Stubby: An Unlikely Hero, the real-life story of Pvt. Robert Conroy and his adopted stray Stubby who, as the title indicates, becomes an unlikely hero during WWI.

This heartwarming tale of adventure and courage is rated PG and we are pleased to offer this screening at a special discounted rate of $5 per ticket.

Selected for competition at both Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival, Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels’s This Magnificent Cake! will be making its Western Canadian debut during the festival.

Set in colonial Africa in the late 19th century, this mini-masterpiece tells the sometimes hilarious interconnected stories of five characters, including that of a troubled king who sets off the events of the entire film in almost accidental fashion.

This Magnificent Cake! will be presented with a collection of short films.

Saturday will close with the North American debut of Iranian director Ashkan Rahgozar’s epic The Last Fiction.

An astounding achievement seven years in the making, Rahgozar’s film is based on classic Persian literature, “The Shahnameh by Ferdowsi” (“The Book of Kings”), and follows upstart ruler Zahak’s treacherous rise to the throne in Jamkard (ancient Persia) and naïve Afaridoun, the young hero who will save the kingdom and people from the darkness.

We are pleased to present The Last Fiction with an introduction from the filmmaker and a Skype Q&A to follow the screening.
