Online Sales for SPARK ANIMATION Opening Night Close at Midnight Tonight
The SPARK ANIMATION 2018 Film Festival opens tomorrow night with a presentation of this year’s award-winning shorts and feature films, 7PM at Scotiabank Theatre.
This year’s award winners, as selected by the Festival Jury, encompass a wide variety of animation styles created by a diverse group of filmmakers from around the world, including the Best in Show winner Late Afternoon from Irish director Louise Bagnall, a touching tale of a woman suffering from Alzheimer's, the eye-popping Best VFX winner Sigma from a team of French animators, and the remarkable Best Student Stop Motion winner Daisy from Taiwan’s Yu Yu.
In addition to the announcement of the 2018 award winners, Nick Park of Aardman Animations and Wallace and Gromit fame, will be presented with the SPARK Lifetime Achievement Award.
The recipients of this year’s Women In Animation (WIA) Diversity Awards will also be honoured at the film festival opening tomorrow night. The Diversity Awards were established to recognize and honour individuals, companies, and organizations that have made a significant impact in expanding the diversity of voices in the art and industry of animation.
WIA and SPARK are pleased to recognize the following Diversity Award winners: National Film Board of Canada for its commitment to creating gender parity among filmmakers, Alex Widdowson’s Music & Clowns for the film’s honest and heartfelt portrayal of people with developmental disabilities, and pioneer animator Brenda Banks, widely recognized as the first African American woman to work in animation, including a wide range of film and television projects from the early ‘70s all the way through 2005. Taylor Shaw, founder and CEO of Black Women Animate, will accept the award on behalf of Ms. Banks.
Proceeds from all festival screenings, less fees and GST, will be donated to Covenant House Vancouver.
