SPARK ANIMATION Conference Starts at 9AM

This year’s SPARK ANIMATION 2018 Conference opens with a presentation from director Karey Kirkpatrick and members of his team talking about the making of the charming Smallfoot.

Conference presentations continue throughout the day on two tracks of programming to choose from. Track 1 includes talks from Eric Darnell (Madagascar films), part of the team behind Adult Swim’s long-running Robot Chicken, and story artists Denise Koyama and Paul Watling talking about the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse among others.

Track 2 features discussions with a number of directors on their new films including Denis Do speaking on Funan which screened last night at the festival and local filmmaker Denver Jackson speaking on his freshly completed Ensula: The First Monolith.

Weekend and Day Pass holders have priority access to both Track 1 and 2 of programming, but Track 2 is free and open to the public.

Single session conference tickets will also be available for $30 each. These are not available for online purchase and will be on sale at the venue on the day of the presentation (accepting cash and credit).

The Conference will wrap tomorrow and you still have time to participate.

Sunday Day Passes will be available for pre-purchase until midnight tonight. Sunday Day Passes will also be available at the venue tomorrow morning beginning at 8AM. Day Passes are $175.

Today at the SPARK ANIMATION 2018 Film Festival

Expect another day of exceptional animated shorts and feature films today as the SPARK ANIMATION 2018 Film Festival screenings continue at the Vancity Theatre.

Life Animated, a collection of animated documentaries starts the day off at 1:30PM. The program includes Fired Up, Dan Fipphen’s and Elyse Kelly’s energetic animation of a famous speech from former American President Barack Obama, as well as the powerful Carlotta’s Face from Valentin Riedl, and Frédéric of Germany, which tells the heartbreaking story of a woman suffering from face blindness.

At 3:30PM, the red carpet is rolled out for the premiere of the Made in Canada program, highlighting some of the best animation our country has to offer, including Vladimir Mokhov’s hilarious spin on Zorro Ramón the Magnificent. Also included are the world premiere of local filmmaker Julia Kwan’s The Zoo, and Julie Larah and William Bradford’s brilliant Commute.

This year’s Spotlight on France program, showcasing top French animation, starts at 5:30PM. This program’s titles include the rip-roaring mountain-rescue-gone-wrong Hors Piste, as well as Academy Award hopefuls The Green Bird and Hybrids.

Cannes Film Festival favourite This Magnificent Cake! from Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, will screen at 7:30PM with a program of short films.

The day’s program closes at 9:45PM with the international premiere of Iranian feature The Last Fiction.

Based on classic Persian literature, director Ashkan Rahgozar’s feature film debut is an action-packed tale of adventure nearly a decade in the making.

Rahgozar will be conducting a post-screening Q & A via video link.

Online sales will close at noon for today’s screenings but tickets will be available at the venue box office (accepting cash, debit and credit).

Proceeds from all festival screenings (less PayPal fees and GST) will be donated to Covenant House Vancouver.
